Yeah, it might be worth an invite there - pretty rabid reading group for sure!

That seems like a reasonable take. I did find the end a bit jarring in that sense. We are following along with a specific group of people as they manage change, but then the true scope of the change is revealed to be rather far beyond even what I in…

Fair enough!

I'm good with whatever it setup. I like it as simple as possible for myself. This is actually a good reminder for me to push through and read some of these books, even if I don't care for them as much, as part of the social contract of a book club! …

I could see a village like this being used a "stop" in one of the games. The flood would be a great story arc to move things along as well.

I did a little poking about and he did some travelling in Cambodia, and other works of his focus on that area of the world. It's unfortunately an area of the world I know next to nothing about, so I can't speak at all to Ryman's protrayal, but I tho…

Yeah, I agree with @RichardAbbott as well. Really wish we could have explored this more, as we kind of skimmed the surface of it.
-
Agreed, I touched on this already elsewhere, but the way it laid out how employing highly disruptive tech (evenm if the tech was essentially fantasy in the way it operated) without really caring about the consequences, and then trying to clean up th…

I agree, I'm not sure I "liked" Chung Mae either, but I really appreciated a book that was written from the perspective of a middle aged woman who didn't have everything put together, made a lot of mistakes, but was rather human. Not the u…

I echo mostly what you guys are saying, though I also was struck by how the technology was just sort of rolled out and then the effects were studied after. Those who tested it were interested in how it harmed people and how they were impacted, but o…

At first I thought the book was a warning about technology and how it can have profound impacts on those you don't maybe consider, but by the end I wasn't entirely sure. The villagers were clearly intelligent and adaptable and were going to figure o…

I am unsure if I really enjoyed this book or not after letting it simmer for a bit. Even now, a few weeks after completing it, a lot of the specifics sort of already faded away. I felt like the author did a decent job of convincing me that the villa…

I'll get some thoughts up soon, but need to find some time!
-
I'll be putting them up tomorrow.

I started the book but also was unable to finish it. I didn't find it very interesting. I don't mind romance in books at all, but this one did not work for me from what I read.

Thanks!

Heard good things about that book as well. I would up for Air by Geoff Ryman for August. Clarke winner and I have never read any of his books. If it's too difficult to get a hold of let me know and I can change gears.

Maybe, but I am not so certain. There are other books which give off the cozy catastrophe feeling and maybe Christopher just wanted to lay out an alternate version. I'm not sure it means he automatically promotes it, so much as explores it. Of cours…

It appears I added many additional letters to that word :D

I'm jealous.

I don't see a lot of unique material for a game here either.
-
Is it promoting authoritarianism, or is it asking the question about whether authoritarisanism is the most relaistic ends of a situation like this?
-
I would have thought it was a trad wife thing as well, but my wife is definitely not THAT! :D
-
Yeah, I'm not likely to be super useful in a setting like this. I'd do my best, but I wouldn't be creating engines that run off of burning wood or repairing water wheels.
-
Totally agree with @NeilNjae that it ends right where I think Christopher wants us to end up thinking about things. WHat happens next sort of doesn't matter because the de-evolution of man has already occurred no matter what sort of society is built…

This is one aspect I wonder about. Would society really shift in this way with such a split between make and female, or would we retain more of the current setup that we have now. I'll have to read this book again with Hobbes in mind @NeilNjae - fir…

Yeha, the comparisons to COVID were immediate for me. First, mocking other countries for their inability to control what happened, then some real nationalistic us vs them as things progressed. I mean, we're still dealing with it in some circles now.

These guys reminded me a little bit of the two guys from The Dog Stars - though I liked the gritty gun guy (Bangley) from The Dog Stars more (liked in terms of the character - I don't know that I would really like to spend time with him). I do think…

I think it's a fine setup. Nothing too radical to be honest. Many books feature crop failure as a part of an apocalypse, but this one makes it the main focus. As others have alreayd mentioned though, it's really just a convenient setup for a story w…

I should also add though, that I read one other romantasy (I think it could be considered as such) book called The Everlasting by Alix Harrow. That book was fantastic and one of the best books I read in the past year. It also just won the Locus awar…
