Since a few of us are interested in Travel Light, should we start there since it is a little bit shorter? And then we can work on figuring out a book for November?
-
Let's skip another Priest book then.
-
(Quote) This looks quite intriguing and would be interested in reading it.

I'll throw out a couple ideas. Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock The Separation by Christopher Priest I'm always down for a horror novel as well.
-
Sure, set it up and we can throw a few ideas out there to see what we can come up with!
-
Oh wow, I had not thought that. Now I wonder...

THat's a good question. I find Soviet SF has a very distinct style, and the 3 Body Problem books also were very distinct. However, had I NOT know before reading those books that they were translated, would I have noticed then? Perhaps not.

I actually think this idea could work really well in a game, and sort of gets used already. The stories that begin in a little village, only for the scope of the crisis to expand as the game goes on - fairly standard. I think it would potentially be…

What has been said is about what I thought the themes were as well. Petty revenge carried out by people with unbelievable power. The impacts on regular people by monstrous systems that dehumanize individuals. Individuals being cogs in a machine. The…

Loved it and thought it was particularly well done, and a great piece of insight into our own society, if only scaled up to 11. The consequences of policies, wars, and fueds on regular people can certainly be pushed into the background in our own wo…

I had no idea. The translation was seamless for me.

Yeah I'm with @NeilNjae Maybe it's a novel and maybe it is not - I would suspect there are some specific scholarly types that could make a good argument one way or the other. The only tenuously connected stories didn't cause an issue for me as the c…

Hmm, I'd have to really think on the space opera categorization. That doesn't quite feel right to me, but then I can't really pinpoint what else might.

I really loved this book. Easy to read, had some great scenes, and the scope of the revenge tale combined with how little the massive revenge really mattered to the current Emperor really gave me a creeping doom sort of feeling. The way the book sta…

I finished it as well.
-
Yeah, it might be worth an invite there - pretty rabid reading group for sure!
-
That seems like a reasonable take. I did find the end a bit jarring in that sense. We are following along with a specific group of people as they manage change, but then the true scope of the change is revealed to be rather far beyond even what I in…

Fair enough!

I'm good with whatever it setup. I like it as simple as possible for myself. This is actually a good reminder for me to push through and read some of these books, even if I don't care for them as much, as part of the social contract of a book club! …

I could see a village like this being used a "stop" in one of the games. The flood would be a great story arc to move things along as well.

I did a little poking about and he did some travelling in Cambodia, and other works of his focus on that area of the world. It's unfortunately an area of the world I know next to nothing about, so I can't speak at all to Ryman's protrayal, but I tho…

Yeah, I agree with @RichardAbbott as well. Really wish we could have explored this more, as we kind of skimmed the surface of it.
-
Agreed, I touched on this already elsewhere, but the way it laid out how employing highly disruptive tech (evenm if the tech was essentially fantasy in the way it operated) without really caring about the consequences, and then trying to clean up th…

I agree, I'm not sure I "liked" Chung Mae either, but I really appreciated a book that was written from the perspective of a middle aged woman who didn't have everything put together, made a lot of mistakes, but was rather human. Not the u…

I echo mostly what you guys are saying, though I also was struck by how the technology was just sort of rolled out and then the effects were studied after. Those who tested it were interested in how it harmed people and how they were impacted, but o…

At first I thought the book was a warning about technology and how it can have profound impacts on those you don't maybe consider, but by the end I wasn't entirely sure. The villagers were clearly intelligent and adaptable and were going to figure o…

I am unsure if I really enjoyed this book or not after letting it simmer for a bit. Even now, a few weeks after completing it, a lot of the specifics sort of already faded away. I felt like the author did a decent job of convincing me that the villa…

I'll get some thoughts up soon, but need to find some time!
-
I'll be putting them up tomorrow.

I started the book but also was unable to finish it. I didn't find it very interesting. I don't mind romance in books at all, but this one did not work for me from what I read.
